What About Forensic Psychology?

When someone commits a crime, people often wonder about the reasons. Do those who commit crimes never think of implications for others, they simply don't care, or they get a huge buzz from it? As they embroil themselves or others in covering up their actions, does it not occur to them they'll get caught? There are all sorts of theories, from behavioural or social, to deep psychological. We like to make sense of things somewhere, and often what we think is a 'clue' to the puzzle eventually surfaces. We feel things making sense like in a good book or TV show.

And when someone commits a shocking crime, getting away with it for years, it really can seem genuine when they finally admit how badly they feel. With others, it looks like they'd do the same again with less than half-a-chance. I never cease to be surprised when someone murders his wife, and is found years later, seemingly living a normal married life. What that is like for the current wife must be horrendous. Some of these men split their family into supporters and detractors, and manage the same with the legal process, dragging things on with denials, appeals and retrials. They are very persuasive! I sound as if it is mainly men who default, but there are cases of women who get away with deception and murder on a serial scale.

Do they separate parts of themselves off? Can anyone do it? Can someone do it to others?

Some criminals have used a defence that it was another part of themselves committing a crime: 'It was the other Brian', or maybe 'Little Brian'. They may genuinely feel someone or something else made them do it, something just came over them, or they do not remember. In some courts in the United States, films are allowed to be shown which seem to suggest that someone is acting in different modes or personalities. And a significant proportion of offenders and prison inmates have, at some stage in their lives, suffered injury to the brain.

I cannot deny the validity of these findings. However, it would mean that virtually anyone may be able to disclaim responsibility when their behaviour comes under scrutiny. What I feel may happen in some 'ritual abuse' scenarios is that well-meaning therapists have at times been too lenient, wore the wrong spectacles, or tended to believe in rather too much. When someone describes horrendous events, the natural reaction is to feel sympathy and horror. But there may be other reasons for someone describing things and being certain of their reality, for them. Like other scenarios, once someone has gone public with an account or a theory, it is not easy to think 'Hang on, I'm not so sure in this instance.' Am I saying there is no such thing as ritual abuse?  I am not. People have different experiences and challenges to face, and it is what they do about them that matters. Some people are able to realise what they have done, or what has been done to them, and to help others understand. Others deny not only their part, but also what others have been through. Whether people follow this or that path or way for themselves, it should at least be their own choice.

Dr Paul Simpson founded Project Middle Ground in Arizona, after firstly encouraging clients to talk in terms of child abuse using a method of regression, then realising that many of the apparent recollections were more likely a side-effect of the type of therapeutic approach. His book entitled 'Second Thoughts' is still available and explains more fully.

When I realised how techniques like guided imagery, subpersonalities, facilitated communication, hypnosis and general frameworks of therapeutic or other belief, were likely to be influential in some outcomes, I rethought a lot of my own assumptions.

Do People Have Souls?

I believe so, although I am not particularly religious. I believe it is important that people are allowed and helped to make up their own minds, make their own mistakes even. There has been talk in counselling circles over whether people should be given advice. Giving advice is not a part of counselling and therapy, though some situations may differ, so long as it is used wisely. I find that, whatever a situation looks like, things can alter significantly. The best person to handle decisions is the person whose life it is. Something may look like a dead cert; often it is not.

The best healer can be someone who comes along in a person's life, and a relationship forms. Even if it breaks up, with luck it leaves the individual strong enough to make decisions for themselves that may also affect others. Obviously, these things can work out adversely for an individual, but it can also work miracles.

Cults, Controlling Relationships

When someone gets drawn into a relationship with an individual with a strong imbalance of power, or where a guru-type cult-leader, or a cultic group is involved, attempts are made to control increasing amounts and areas of individuals' lives. There are some excellent books and blogs about these issues. In essence, the leader sets him- or herself up as a kind of demigod - who has to be obeyed and never questioned. To my mind, that is where souls come into it. Somehow the leader gains power, and has increasingly to exert control. Some notorious and devastating cults seem to have begun with high ideals and quite ordinary behaviour.

Some business enterprises can become similar in effect. One of the main problems with a controlling spouse, or boss, or group leader, is that friends may see what is happening and sound an alarm, which falls on deaf ears. Their friend has got well and truly hooked, and cannot hear anything or anyone else. It can happen fast; alternatively the build-up is slow and insidious.

In closing this section, I'll just mention that some powerful cults began by portraying themselves as beneficial therapy groups. They worked, but very destructively. One cannot help but wonder if that is their real purpose, to get in under the radar to the Soul. You've heard the phrase about capturing Hearts & Minds. If the game-plan is to 'capture' Souls, leaving no route out for those selected, that could explain a thing or two. If some higher echelon in a cult or in wider society, reckons that sexual abuse of youngsters particularly, seriously hampers their development and wellbeing, does that explain even more? As to whether perpetrators (or some faction behind the scenes) actually gains power or strength through these activities, we do not know.

Another catchy phrase is Divide & Conquer, where factions are set up so as not to get-it-together, see the picture and cooperate, or go against each other, argue Yes, there's lots of abuse - believe survivors, or No, no proof - back under the carpet. The same thing has happened over ritual abuse. A convenient plan, for some? A plan nonetheless.

Watch yourself. Protect yourself.

Personal Responsibility

When people write about reincarnation or past lives, they may wax lyrical on the glamour of certain eras or quests, and that some groups of people tend to come together in groups. It can be very offputting to those who are excluded, or have no guidelines as to what life is about, what they're meant to be doing and so on. Why does any of it matter? Perhaps because people can get drawn into things that aren't what they really believe in, and would not otherwise have responsibility for. It can happen so easily, for one reason or another, or simply inexplicably. Unless we are careful. Sometimes people share living accommodation, which has an impact on things like boundaries and privacy, and I've seen people lose parts of their individuality or identity.

Some of the most down-to-earth writers on esoteric subjects, advise people to make up their own minds about what matters in their circumstances, and just  keep doing the best they can.

Searching for Meaning

This is getting into an area I had no intention of starting on, and will leave readers to continue. I have listed writers on some esoteric subjects you may wish to follow up. If people have souls, then they may also have other lives in other times & places, other themes or tasks, other explanations. Believe or reject or leave for now.

When I became concerned over accounts of ritual abuse, I went to lectures, mixed around, got shed-loads of books, my usual efforts towards getting answers to questions. I sat at a talk where suddenly the lecturer said he thought some experiences of multiple personalities were likely to be when people got 'stuck in their archetypes', and we spoke afterwards. It is over my head and not my usual way of thinking. However I feel it worth considering. Also people can act as though they are influenced by characters on-screen or in books, and emulate people they come across. So what really is character or personality, today and many years down the line? I've known people who became very different. I changed a lot. Have you?

Just as we do different things at different times in the day, we will have different emphasis or purpose at different times of life, handling things as best we can. There are likely to be a few people who tend to help, or some who hinder. The stuff of myth and fairy tales perhaps.

Full Circle: Wrapping Things Up

When I was knee-high to a grasshopper,  I played with a young friend I'll call Val. Her father worked at the local college, and we had the run of the grounds and shrubberies. No Internet in those days, so we played fairies and witches all over the place. One day Val was being a nasty fairy or witch, and I shouted 'But good always wins'. I like to believe that, but have to admit many bad things happen to people who are described as lighting up a room. I am no roomlighter, but sometimes when I get drawn into something, stuff seems to change. It is not always an easy ride.

I watch or read things that either bore or scare people to death. Have you read about the djinn? Maybe it is something like those, or demons by any other name. If you think strange things can happen, or that one or more of them might contribute to weird behaviour or events, perhaps that is the kind of ballpark. When I write on subjects that are even less outrageous than this, readers vanish. A few are watching this Blog already although it is new. Happened to me before and all kinds of hassle started. Something is jollying this along anyway, so we shall see. Use what you can from here or anywhere, reject anything, and make up your own mind.
There is speculation on conspiracy sites about a tie-in between UFO's, demons, djinn, black magic, and maybe ritual abuse. Who knows? My current thinking is that it might explain a lot about strange and inhuman behaviours, including the kind of things some people claim happen in rituals in darkened woods or under ground. Something at back of these rituals could explain why people who abuse children in rituals or in children's homes, can seem to 'take it or leave it'. The addiction does not take over every aspect of their lives all of the time, which is why it could be your friends or neighbours. You'd never know about it. Do they necessarily? It could be that they enter, or are placed in, an altered state of consciousness.

People may have had to agree to some kind of a deal. It is likely that not all are involved in any or all cult activities, but fulfil a role like passing on information on a cult member's whereabouts, in return for getting some bills paid, or their children's schooling. It could be anything.

Over to anyone who can shed light on some of this darkness.

This Blog was never intended to be anecdotal, and I had no idea where it would go. Often it is small things from conversations on a bus or standing in a queue that link things, or a TV programme happened across. Things are meaningful in different ways, so with the Internet people can find out things to suit them. I took a Psychology degree hoping to find out 'why people do what they do'. Travelling to London, I was in bookshops getting all manner of relevant and irrelevant material. Later, a colleague emphasised that the unconscious drives behaviour. I am now adding in emotions. Skipping many years, I had to wind up what looked like a simple estate but it was not. The solicitor was brilliant with complex stuff, but if I wanted something done for myself, I would do it or get other help. With trepidation I walked down to finalise things with him. Somehow we got chatting about psychism, intuition, chance, psychic detectives, conspiracies, and I emerged over an hour later. We had read the same stuff, much of which I'd sold off and later gone back to. Many of the original theorists got discounted for a while, but are now going strong and much ties in with other findings. Recently I came across 'Ancient Aliens' on TV, watching with half-attention. But then it got into how various cult leaders based their activities on ideas of influence from other beings or realms. Whether or not that could have happened, a lot of people became influenced one way or another.

When it comes to certain crimes, or what most people regard as cruel or senseless behaviour, it can be much the same: acting on a belief or fantasy, or maybe actual experience. A theory I feel worth looking into refers to our endocrine system, which some esoteric writers link to chakras. If it is somehow possible to activate a part of someone's system, or deactivate rational thinking, one can indeed induce very base behaviour. It happens in groups and crowds. Of interest to me, is when an individual, couple or small group, get started on a course of action that seems to take on a life and impetus of its own. Nothing stops the escalation, and only some participants may ever realise what they took part in.

As part of my aim to find out more 'why people do what they do', and with gaps in what sank in during study, I tried some Philosophy classes. That might seem close to Psychology but not at all easy to grasp. A course on emotions was fascinating though I hardly touched the books. One evening the lecturer slipped in that emotions are not entities. Well maybe they aren't, but what if they can sometimes be something like that? Or is that just woolly thinking? Even staid psychic researchers acknowledge that pent-up emotions can produce strange and powerful effects in the real world.

Also relevant is the concept of a group-mind, which some people link to the idea of an egregore. A kind of reality or consensus builds up and, even though other members are not present, people may act in accordance with that reality or belief system. It ties in with what happens in cults, workplaces and so on. Some cultures place importance on family and ancestors, and believe that current family members may be strongly influenced by traumas or actions of predecessors, or can be possessed by them, or by other forces. There is also a term 'overshadowing', where one seems to write or do something from out of nowhere, as if influenced by something 'other'. And many people have experienced a kind of telepathy with a person they are close to, simply knowing when something is wrong in their life.

You may or may not believe in Souls, but it is of vital importance to protect your boundaries, and not get caught up in what others are up to, who may have a trick up their sleeve and know how to manipulate others, for good or ill. Some sensitivities or traits do seem to be hereditary, and we can only do our best to make sense of them. If you have had a family member who suddenly behaves differently, or can no longer manage certain tasks, it can seem as though they somehow use your circuits for getting by. Similarly, you may share office space with someone who, through no fault of their own, has mood swings or is just not functioning well. Try to get some time and space for yourself. Some people may have insight into what is wrong with them, and others not.

Putting random thoughts on paper, I realise how well they come Full Circle: Cults and families can have bullying and controlling aspects, as well as subtle, more seductive modes, effective when harsher ones don't hack it.
